MV girls golf team closes in on berth in section playoffs

The Mountain View High girls golf team capped its first season in the SCVAL De Anza Division with home victories over Saratoga and Gunn last week to finish third at 6-4 – good enough to qualify for this week’s league tournament.

The Spartans beat Saratoga 207-229 behind Katelyn Lee’s 38 and topped Gunn 210-227, led by Reeya Vasishta’s 37, at Shoreline Golf Links.

Vasishta, Lee and Chloe Weng “all finished a great season by being in the top 15 in our league,” coach Jim McGuirk said.

Mountain View (8-4 overall) was set to compete in the league tourney Tuesday, after the Town Crier’s deadline, at Santa Teresa Golf Course. McGuirk expected a strong effort from the Spartans, noting that they “have a good chance to qualify for CCS.”

Cross-country

Los Altos freshman Lauren Soobrian ran away with the varsity girls race at Saturday’s Monterey Bay Invitational in Salinas. She ran the 3-mile course at Toro Park in 17 minutes, 58 seconds – 43 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Riley Capuano came in 19th for the Eagles, who finished fourth out of 18 teams.

The Los Altos varsity boys also took fourth (out of 23 teams), paced by Hans Holst’s 23rd-place time of 16:38.

Girls tennis

Mountain View won two of its three matches last week. After edging Sacred Heart Prep 4-3 in non-league action, the Spartans defeated Saratoga 5-2 and fell to Monta Vista 4-3 in De Anza Division play.

Mountain View entered this week in second place at 5-4 in the division and 7-4 overall.

Football

Visiting Mountain View shut out Santa Clara 20-0 Friday, improving to 2-1 in the De Anza Division and 6-1 overall.

Los Altos fell 56-32 at Gunn Friday, sinking to 2-2 in the SCVAL El Camino Division and 3-5 overall.
