Spirit of Sport deadline nears

Monday is the deadline to apply for the 2019 Fall CIF Spirit of Sport Award. The California Interscholastic Federation, which governs the state’s high school sports, recognizes one male and one female student-athlete during each season of sport for exemplary sportsmanship, school/community service and leadership. Winners receive a patch, an award, a $500 scholarship and recognition at the year-end CIF Federated Council dinner April 3 in San Diego. To apply, visit cifstate.org.

Fall hoops camp underway at MVHS

Spartans Sports Camp’s Fall Basketball Camp is scheduled 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays through October in the Mountain View High gym. The camp is open to boys and girls in grades 3-8. Registration is $60 for one day; cost includes a T-shirt, water bottle and drawstring backpack. Spartans Sports Camp is a nonprofit; all proceeds benefit the Mountain View High athletic department. Golf fundraiser set for this month

Special Operations’ annual golf tournament is slated Oct. 21 at Los Altos Golf & Country Club, 1560 Country Club Drive. Proceeds from the fundraiser support the organization’s goal of keeping children safe from sex trafficking in the Bay Area. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., lunch is at noon and the shotgun start at 1 p.m. Cocktails and a silent auction follow the 18 holes of golf at 5 p.m., and dinner is at 6 p.m. Cost is $400 per player. Women’s golf group welcomes new members

City of Mountain View offers open gym for teens

The Mountain View Recreation Division’s Teen Open Gym, free and open to the city’s middle and high school students, is scheduled 6:30-9:30 p.m. Saturdays at the Whisman Sports Center, 1500 Middlefield Road. The weekly events offer young people a safe place to play pick-up games of basketball, volleyball and indoor soccer. All participants are required to show their student IDs at the door.
