Los Altos girls basketball, Gunn girls soccer stun Paly

The Los Altos High girls basketball team rallied in the second half to knock off upper-division opponent Palo Alto 54-43 last week.

The visiting Eagles, down seven at intermission, outscored the Vikings 38-20 the rest of the way Nov. 28. Jamie Baum totaled 17 points to lead Los Altos, and Mahika Gupta added 14.

The Eagles beat host Aragon 63-58 Friday, improving to 3-0.

Tied with Mills at the half, St. Francis pulled away in the third quarter with an 18-10 run Thursday at the Mills Tournament. Mia Grizelj finished with 17 points.

Girls soccer

With help from its four Los Altos Hills residents, Gunn stunned rival Palo Alto 2-0 Nov. 27.

The visiting Titans scored a goal in each half of the non-league game. Goalie Nicole Smith of Los Altos Hills earned the shutout. Hills residents Lauryn Nakamitsu (midfield), Molly Wilkinson (outside back) and Natalie Smith (forward and Nicole’s younger sister) also contributed to the win.

Riley Burrill scored two goals in St. Francis’ 4-1 win over Menlo-Atherton Saturday in the Fremont Firebird Classic. Caroline Kane added a goal and an assist; Samantha Park scored the final goal.

Boys basketball

Mountain View mauled Mt. Pleasant 78-10 in the first round of the Westmont Tournament Nov. 28. The Spartans built a 31-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Mountain View fell 53-43 to Willow Glen a day later in the second round, dropping the Spartans to 2-1 overall.

Los Altos improved to 3-0 with Thursday’s 55-45 home win over Soquel.

Boys soccer

With Friday’s 3-0 victory at Milpitas, Jim McGuirk picked up his 300th win as Mountain View coach. Ben Smith scored two goals for the Spartans (2-0).
