Local tree lots support high school sports

Tree lots benefiting athletics at Mountain View and Los Altos highs, respectively, are open for business. Proceeds from the Spartans Tree Lot go toward purchasing sports equipment and improving facilities at Mountain View High. Operating hours are 5-8 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends next to the football field at Mountain View High, 3535 Truman Ave. For more information, visit Proceeds from MVLA Trees, the Los Altos High tree lot, support the school’s sports programs and clubs. CIF sets deadline for scholarship apps

Jan. 22 is the winter deadline to apply for the CIF Spirit of Sport Award, recognizing one male and one female statewide during each high school sports season. Selections are based on exemplary sportsmanship and school/community service and leadership, according to officials from the California Interscholastic Federation, which governs the state’s high school sports. Each winner receives a $1,000 scholarship. Additionally, 60 section winners (one male and one female from each of the 10 CIF Sections, in each season of sport) receives a $500 scholarship. City of Mtn. View offers open gym

The Mountain View Recreation Division’s Teen Open Gym, free and open to the city’s middle and high school students, is scheduled 6:30-9:30 p.m. Saturdays at the Whisman Sports Center, 1500 Middlefield Road. The weekly events offer youth a place to play pick-up basketball, volleyball and indoor soccer. All participants are required to show a student ID at the gym entrance. Women’s golf group invites new members
