Hoops camp starts Saturday at MVHS

Spartans Sports Camp’s Fall Basketball Camp is scheduled to tip off Saturday and run for seven weeks in the Mountain View High gym. Open to boys and girls in grades 3-8, the weekly, half-day camp covers shooting, ball handling and defense. The camp is slated 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays through Oct. 27, except Sept. 29. Youth volleyball club holds tryouts Saturday

The Mountain View Volleyball Club has scheduled tryouts for its boys youth league 5-6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Gateway Neighborhood Center in Sunnyvale. The 14-week program, which stresses fundamentals and skill development, is open to boys in grades 5-8. The tryout fee is $25 in advance, $30 on the day of the event. CIF sets deadline for Spirit of Sport Award

The deadline to apply for the 2018 Fall CIF Spirit of Sport Award is Sept. 24. The California Interscholastic Federation, which governs the state’s high school sports, recognizes one male and one female student-athlete during each season of sport for exemplary sportsmanship, school/community service and leadership. Winners receive a patch, an award, and a $500 scholarship and will be recognized at the year-end CIF Federated Council dinner. To apply, visit
