Local towns schedule softball game Aug. 18

Residents of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills are encouraged to register for the inaugural community softball game between the two cities, scheduled 1-3 p.m. Aug. 18. The co-ed match – meant as a friendly, cross-town rivalry competition – is coordinated by the Parks and Recreation departments of both cities, according to Sarah Robustelli, Los Altos Hills community services supervisor. Celebration of sailing set for Shoreline Lake

Shoreline Lake in Mountain View is participating in this weekend’s Summer Sailstice, the annual family-friendly, global celebration of summer and sailing to raise awareness of the benefits of sailing. Free events – including skippered sailboat rides for kids and racing demos for newbies/nonsailors – are scheduled 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. GreenTown hosts summer solstice ride

GreenTown Los Altos has scheduled an 18-mile summer solstice bike ride 7:30 p.m. Thursday, starting in front of Peet’s Coffee & Tea on State Street in downtown Los Altos. Cyclists will ride to the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve to view the sunset at 8:32 p.m., then head back to Los Altos via the Stevens Creek Trail, with an optional stop in Mountain View for hot chocolate, coffee and socializing.
