The St. Francis High football team will face a familiar foe in the Central Coast Section Open Division II final – Serra, a fellow member of the West Catholic Athletic League. The third-seeded Lancers (9-3) are slated to play the top-seeded Padres (10-2) 7 p.m. Saturday at Independence High.
The teams last met Nov. 10, when Serra beat host St. Francis 31-21 to claim the WCAL title. The Lancers have since won a pair of playoff games in blowout fashion: 51-27 over No. 6 Wilcox Nov. 17 and 42-7 at No. 2 Aragon Friday.
“Coach told us not to let that take over our minds,” halfback Darrell Page said of how the Lancers bounced back from the Serra loss. “Just focus on the next week, because we’re probably going to see them again, and we’re going to prepare even better for them.”
Page ran for a 6-yard touchdown against Aragon, and Reed Vettel threw two TD passes.
Led by its underclassmen, the Los Altos High girls basketball team overwhelmed Overfelt 41-30 to open the season last week.
All of the Eagles’ points came from underclassmen, 22 of them from freshman guard Jamie Baum.
“Jamie Baum ran the point for us (Nov. 21) and did a nice job for it being her first high school game,” coach Jaclyn Brode said.
Baum was the lone double-digit scorer for visiting Los Altos, which won despite shooting only 26 percent from the field.
The Eagles’ shooting struggles continued Saturday in a 45-37 loss at Burlingame. Los Altos shot 31 percent and made 18 turnovers.
Brode said the Eagles “played lethargic and unfocused,” yet they never gave up, cutting their deficit to four points in the final quarter.
Senior guard Rachel Lu and junior forward Mahika Gupta scored 12 points each.
