Kate Atherton’s last-minute goal propelled the Mountain View High girls water polo team to a 7-6 victory over Gunn Thursday. The senior scored the game-winner with 39 seconds left.
Atherton totaled three goals to pace the host Spartans, who improved to 5-2 in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division and 13-2 overall. Malena Nguyen contributed two goals.
“Gunn goalie Zoe Banks was incredible,” Mountain View coach Drew Enlow said, “but the Spartans never gave up.”
The Spartans “played excellent defense,” according to the coach, whose team avenged its overtime loss to the league-leading Titans (6-1, 9-2) three weeks earlier.
Los Altos crushed Cupertino 18-7 Thursday behind eight goals from junior Julia Santos. Margo Lusinchi added three goals.
The visiting Eagles improved to 4-3 in the De Anza Division and 7-5 overall.
Boys water polo
Los Altos whipped Wilcox 10-3 on the road Thursday, getting five goals from Kyle Sandell. Scott Cairns added two goals.
The Eagles went to 4-4 in the De Anza Division and 7-6 overall.
St. Francis slipped by Serra 12-11 Sept. 28 in West Catholic Athletic League play.
Nathan Puentes scored four goals for the visiting Lancers (6-8 overall) and Sean Ferrari registered three. Ziad Tannous and Frank Lozinski chipped in two goals each.
St. Francis snapped an 11-game losing streak against WCAL rival Bellarmine with Friday’s 21-12 win at San Jose City College.
Garrett McCarthy returned two punts for touchdowns and Cyrus Habibi-Likio rushed for the other as the Lancers remained unbeaten (2-0 league, 5-0 overall).
Pinewood pounded host Anzar 46-14 Friday to improve to 4-0. Alex Banning rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns.
Rebounding from a 4-3 non-league loss to Homestead a day earlier, Mountain View topped Wilcox 5-2 Thursday in SCVAL El Camino Division action. No. 1 doubles team Samantha Joseph and Jade Wang won both days for the Spartans (3-2 league).
Pinewood recorded its first WBAL victory of the season, 4-3 at Harker Thursday. Three of the Panthers’ wins came in three sets (the other via default), including Haley Mathews’ 7-6, 2-6, 10-7 result at No. 2 singles.
St. Francis evened its record at 1-1 in the WCAL by beating host Valley Christian in five sets Sept. 28. Mollie Ebertin and Gabrielle Heller notched 16 kills each for the Lancers (15-7 overall).
Hanadi Nassif recorded 10 kills and four aces as Los Altos swept visiting Monta Vista Thursday in De Anza Division play. The Eagles raised their record to 3-2 in league and 11-8 overall.
St. Francis won both its WCAL matches last week, following a 199-235 victory over Sacred Heart Cathedral with a 183-218 triumph over Mitty. Jacqueline Sun earned medalist honors Sept. 27 and Maya Pugatch did so Thursday for the Lancers (3-1).
Mountain View’s Gabrielle Joffe finished fourth in the girls varsity race at SCVAL Meet No. 1 Sept. 27 at Central Park in Santa Clara. The junior ran the course in 14 minutes, 19 seconds.
