LAHS freshman makes CCS semis; Lancers fall to LG in NorCal final

Experience won out in the singles semifinals of the Central Coast Section girls tennis championships, as Los Altos High freshman Yuu Ishikawa fell to junior Ashley Yeah of Los Gatos in straight sets.

Top-seeded Yeah – who went on to win the CCS title for the second straight year – defeated No. 4 Ishikawa 6-2, 6-1 Nov. 15 at Bay Club Courtside in Los Gatos.

No tennis team in Northern California has defeated the Los Altos High girls this season, and the Eagles would like that to continue in this week’s Central Coast Section playoffs.

“I think we’ll do well,” coach Hung Nguyen said. “I look forward to it.”

The Los Altos High girls tennis team all but clinched the league title with last week’s 5-2 win over Mountain View.

The Eagles improved to 8-0 in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division with four matches remaining, while the second-place Spartans sank to 6-2. All of Los Altos’ wins came in straight sets Oct. 10.

Going into Thursday’s early-season girls tennis match between Los Altos and Mountain View highs, Eagles coach Hung Nguyen and Spartans coach Frank Smyth mentioned the other’s team – along with Gunn – as their biggest challengers for the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division title.

Los Altos pulled ahead of the pack with a 5-2 road victory in which its top singles and doubles players won in convincing fashion. Freshman phenom Yuu Ishikawa prevailed 6-3, 6-0 over Elise Joshi at No. 1 singles, while the duo of Kylie Akiyama and Krithika Nathamuni defeated Yvonne Lin and Jayna Dave 6-4, 6-1 atop the doubles ladder.
