The seven local residents who competed in this year’s Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon included a first-time participant and a wily race veteran who both placed among the top 10 of their respective age divisions June 3.

Escape novice Doug Kylander of Mountain View finished seventh in the men’s 50-54 division with a time of 2 hours, 41 minutes and 39 seconds. That’s 25 minutes faster than any other local who participated in the 38th annual event, comprising a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the shore, an 18-mile bike ride and an 8-mile run through the city.

LAHS Color Run raises record amount for Los Altos High athletics programs

The numbers are in: Los Altos High’s fourth annual Color Run was a record-breaking success.

This year’s fundraiser, held April 28, drew 615 participants and raised $7,360 – both records.

Seeded fourth in the girls 50-yard freestyle, St. Francis High’s Brooke Schaffer surprised even herself by placing second in the finals Saturday at the state swimming and diving championships in Clovis.

“I wasn’t really expecting that,” the junior said. “It was a good surprise.”

Eagles end CCS title drought in gymnastics

The Los Altos High gymnastics team entered last week’s Central Coast Section championships in an unfamiliar position: the favorite.

The Eagles showed throughout the season that they were talented and deep enough to claim the crown, but it had been 28 years since the program won it all.
