Stephen Ciesinski prepares to ride in the Pan-Mass Challenge with Ann Bauer, the widow of his college friend Steve Bauer.

Stephen Ciesinski expected the 2013 Pan-Mass Challenge – an annual bike ride across Massachusetts to raise money for cancer research – to be his last. But the Los Altos Hills resident returned this year to honor good friend and longtime ride participant Steve Bauer, who died last fall.

“I agreed to ride the Pan-Mass Challenge one more time,” said Ciesinski, who last month pedaled 85 miles, from Wellesley to Bourne. “I actually rode Bauer’s bike alongside his friends and four other friends.”

It was teaming with his buddies to play in the Åhus Beach Handball Tournament last month in his native Sweden.
