Spartan Turkey Trot set for Nov. 24

The Mountain View High Sports Boosters’ seventh annual Spartan Turkey Trot is scheduled Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 24, on the school track.

The 5K run is set for 8:30 a.m., the 5K walk at 8:35 a.m., the kids runs (60 and 400 yards) at 9:30 a.m. and the Spartan Mile at 10 a.m. Race-day registration is slated to begin at 7:30 a.m. Registration fees are $25 adults, $15 children ages 5-17, $10 children under 5 and students in the high school district. Those who register online by Sunday are guaranteed a T-shirt. All proceeds fund team equipment, athletics fields and facility improvements.

Coaching with honor

Her players and their parents have said it for years, and now the Central Coast Section has recognized Mary Donahue for the way she coaches the Los Altos High field hockey team.

The Los Altos resident has been named this year’s CCS Honor Coach for her sport. Criteria for selection include service to the sport, maintaining professional standards of conduct and being a role model and inspiration.

Cricket takes flight in Los Altos

Los Altos resident Sanjeev Kulkarni was born in Hubli, an Indian city north of Bangalore. Cricket is in his blood.

“Cricket is how I grew up,” he said of the sport he played long before moving to the area and becoming vice president of engineering at Peer Nova. “Ever since I was 6, as long as I can remember, I was playing with my brother in the streets.”

CIF survey results find sports participation hits an all-time high for fourth straight year

High school sports participation continues to increase in California and is at an all-time high for the fourth consecutive year, according to the 2016 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sports Participation Survey released in August.

Results show that 779,256 student-athletes have competed in California high school athletic programs during the 2015-16 school year – an increase of 0.85 percent since last year’s survey.
