WCAL announces St. Francis’ slate of contests

The West Catholic Athletic League – which includes St. Francis High – recently revealed its revised sports schedule for the 2020-21 school year.

The California Interscholastic Federation – and subsequently the Central Coast Section – announced in July that sports will be condensed into two seasons, the first starting no sooner than Dec. 28 because of the
COVID-19 pandemic.

A brief rundown of the varsity WCAL schedules for St. Francis’ Season 1 teams follows.


St. Francis – coming off a 4-7 season that included a 3-4 record in the WCAL (fifth place) and an opening-round playoff loss to Valley Christian – kicks off its league season 7 p.m.
Feb. 5 at home against St. Ignatius. Last year, the Lancers lost to the host Wildcats 35-26.
St. Francis takes on longtime rival Bellarmine 7 p.m. March 5 in a game to be played at San Jose City College. The Lancers cap the regular season at 2 p.m. March 20 at Serra. The CCS playoffs begin the following weekend.


The St. Francis boys and girls teams both launch their league seasons on the road Jan. 14, with the boys visiting Serra at 6 p.m. and the girls traveling to Riordan – which has transitioned to a coed school this year – for a 4 p.m. match.
The girls host national power Mitty 6 p.m. Feb. 25 and conclude WCAL play with a 6 p.m. match at St. Ignatius March 2.

The CCS playoffs for boys and girls volleyball start a few days later, with the finals set for
March 13.

Water polo

The St. Francis girls and boys open league Jan. 13 at Sacred Heart Prep, playing at 6 and 7 p.m., respectively.
The Lancers wrap up WCAL action Feb. 24 at home, with the girls facing Presentation at 6 p.m. and the boys meeting rival Bellarmine approximately one hour later.
The CCS playoffs begin the first week of March and culminate March 13.


The St. Francis boys and girls will run in league meets Jan. 30 and Feb. 20, but the WCAL has yet to determine where they will be held and at what time.
The league finals will be March 13 (time to be determined) at Crystal Springs in Belmont. The CCS championship meet follows a week later.
