Vian Patel and his mom, Jeanne Schmitt, stand together after completing the Tri for Fun triathlon.

Vian Patel, a 13-year-old entering eighth grade at Egan Junior High, placed first in the under-14 boys division of the Tri for Fun triathlon Aug. 10 in Herald (Sacramento County).

Vian was the youngest of the more than 100 participants to complete the race, which comprised a half-mile swim in the lake at Rancho Seco Park, a 16-mile bicycle ride and a 3-mile run. The Los Altos resident posted a time of 2 hours, 42 minutes.

Vian prepared for the event – his first triathlon – by running several 5Ks to full marathons in the past three years. He also practiced long-distance swimming in the pool, according to his father, Amit Patel, and biked diligently over the past four months with his mom, Jeanne Schmitt, who also completed the Tri for Fun.
