United Studios of Self Defense of Los Altos recently won the Grand Champion School Trophy at the USSD NorCal Summer Championship Tournament at Cañada College in Redwood City.

The Los Altos school sent 39 students to the kenpo karate tournament, held in the Bay Area twice a year (May and November).

Most of the competitors come from the Bay Area, but students from the Los Angeles and San Diego areas, as well as Nevada, participate as well. They compete in sparring, unarmed forms patterns (Kata) and weapon forms events.

This marked the first time the Los Altos school has been crowned Grand Champion, meaning it received more and higher-placing trophies than any other school in the tourney.

Students from Los Altos entered 67 events, coming away with 48 trophies. This included 19 first-place trophies, 16 second-place trophies, nine third-place trophies and three fourth-place trophies. Many of the events included 30 or more students, with trophies awarded for first through fourth place.
