SF's late rally not enough against Mitty in softball final

Despite being down 9-0 at the start of the sixth inning of the Central Coast Section Open Division final, the St. Francis High softball team showed it wasn’t ready to give up.

The Lancers put up five runs in the sixth and loaded the bases with one away in the seventh before Mitty pitcher Savanna Smith shut them down. She retired the next two batters, preserving a 9-5 win for the Monarchs May 27 at PAL Stadium in San Jose.

Sixth-seeded St. Francis (23-8 overall) finished with 10 hits – just one fewer than No. 4 Mitty (22-6).

Senior Myka Hughes ripped a triple and had two RBIs for St. Francis, while freshman Hailey Prahm, senior Katie Steffen-Brune and sophomore Hannah Damore each went 2-for-4. Freshman Monet Guido added a single, an RBI and a run.

Sophomore pitcher Jordan Schuring, who took the loss, notched a hit and an RBI. Only one of the five runs she allowed was earned.

St. Francis, last in the West Catholic Athletic League last year, tied Mitty for first this season.
