Aided by locals, Legends defend World Series title

The Legends are more than legends – they’re the real deal. The PONY Baseball team recently won an unprecedented third consecutive Colt World Series.

The team of 15- and 16-year-olds is based in Los Gatos but has local ties – assistant coach Donnie Ecker (head coach at Los Altos High) and players Connor Thane and Erik Benedetti (both from St. Francis High).

Ecker said the Legends dominated their first two games of the tournament, held Aug. 2-7 in Lafayette, Ind. They lost to the host team in their next game but avenged it a day later with a 3-1 win over the Lafayette All-Stars.

That put the Legends in the title game against Caguas of Puerto Rico, which they routed 10-0.

“It was a crazy tournament, but pretty neat to win it again,” Ecker said.

The coach praised Thane and Benedetti for their play in the tourney. Thane started at shortstop, while Benedetti saw action at first base and catcher.

Thane “had a great tournament on both sides of the ball and is truly a player that is flying under the radar right now,” Ecker said. He added that Benedetti “had a great tournament with the bat and leadership. He has a great feel for the game and knows how to approach teammates at the right times.”

The Legends qualified for the Colt World Series by winning the West Zone. They went 8-0, outscoring their foes 30-2.
