If finishing a half-point shy of a Central Coast Section playoff berth last year wasn’t hard enough for the Gunn High girls soccer team to swallow, just imagine how the Titans feel after missing CCS by a quarter of a point this season.

“The team was really disappointed and sad that we deserved to play but didn’t qualify,” said coach Juan Mayora, who has five Los Altos Hills residents on his squad.

Admin prevents LA boys soccer team from applying for CCS

The Los Altos High boys soccer team had enough points to make the playoffs, but the administration didn’t allow the Eagles to apply due to an on-field incident last week.

A player received a red card (ejection) for a slide tackle against Palo Alto Feb. 13, according to coach Vava Marques, prompting Principal Wynne Satterwhite and athletic director Michelle Noeth to withhold the team’s playoff application. It was the third time this season a Los Altos player had been ejected from a game, Marques said, and the team had been warned about such behavior prior to last week’s incident.

As high school seniors everywhere anxiously await college acceptance letters, there’s a freshman at Mountain View High who has already determined her destination. Soccer standout Allie Montoya verbally committed to Stanford University Jan. 23.

“It’s kind of a relief,” the 15-year-old said. “I’m super excited.”
