Move to Germany spurs Pomona-bound Arnold's interest in soccer

Los Altos resident Jack Arnold, who spent time in Germany as a child, has committed to play soccer for Pomona College.

If Jack Arnold hadn’t spent a year in Germany as a child, he probably never would have found his passion for soccer.

The Los Altos resident couldn’t help but get caught up in the Germans’ fervor for soccer; it’s their national sport, and the country has won the FIFA World Cup four times.

Soccer player's trip to Spain isn't in vain

The United States isn’t known as an international power in men’s soccer, but Los Altos resident Mwinso Denkabe and the rest of US Club Soccer’s id² National Selection Team recently served notice that America is making strides in the sport.

The squad of 14- and 15-year-old boys capped last month’s successful tour of Spain by becoming the first U.S. team to reach the quarterfinals of the Mediterranean International Cup.

Mountain View High girls soccer team to be honored today

The Central Coast Section champion Mountain View High girls soccer team is scheduled to be honored 12:45 p.m. today in the school’s science quad.

As part of the sixth annual MaxPreps Girls Soccer Tour of Champions recognizing the top 10 teams in the nation, the Spartans will receive a National Guard National Ranking Trophy from MaxPreps and Army National Guard representatives.

Cannon has a blast during induction

As Joe Cannon stood at midfield at Avaya Stadium, he still couldn’t believe it. The Los Altos Hills native, with his family by his side, was entering the San Jose Earthquakes Hall of Fame.

“Pretty surreal,” Cannon said in recalling the April 8 event, held at halftime of the Quakes’ game against the Seattle Sounders. “It was a very memorable night.”
