Two MVLA soccer teams headed to nationals this week

A pair of teams from the Mountain View Los Altos Soccer Club have qualified for the national semifinals.

MVLA 04G Barcelona ECNL and MVLA 05B Pumas NPL are scheduled to begin play in the final four of their respective age groups this week.

Reigning national champ Barcelona, a team of under-15 girls coached by Erin Montoya, went 4-0 at the Elite Club National League playoffs that ended last week in San Diego. The squad edged Ohio Premier 2-1 in the quarterfinals on goals by Leah O’Brien (assist Allie Montoya) and Amalie Pianim (O’Brien).

The victory punched Barcelona’s ticket to the national semifinals, slated Thursday through Saturday in Richmond, Va.

The Pumas, a team of under-14 boys coached by Carlos Menjivar Jr., secured their first appearance in the Elite National Premier League final four by beating Albion Hurricanes FC 2-1 in the quarterfinals July 2 in Rockford, Ill. The Pumas went 3-0-1 at the tournament and allowed only three goals. Alex Peña, Alexi Katsakiris, Ardeshir Heinz, Lucas Fedronic, Isaac Rodarte and Chris Aguilar scored goals for them.

The Pumas’ pursuit of a national crown is set to kick off Thursday in Commerce City, Colo.; the tourney runs through Saturday.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help the team pay for its travel expenses. To donate, visit and type “ENPL National Finals Trip” in the search field to locate the page.
