Los Altos boys triumph 52-33

Turns out Gunn’s full-court pressure defense was just what the Los Altos High boys basketball team needed to snap out of its almost season-long scoring slump. The Eagles broke the press time and time again for easy baskets en route to a 52-33 home victory Friday night.

“We’ve had some trouble scoring this year,” said coach Trevor Naas, whose team entered the SCVAL De Anza Division opener averaging just 45 points per game, “so the fact that our press break was executed well today and got some easy baskets was definitely big for us.”

Lancers fend off Spartans in neighborhood rivalry

Although the high schools are less than 2 miles apart, the Mountain View and St. Francis boys basketball teams don’t have an annual tradition of playing each other. Sure, they might scrimmage or meet in a tournament, but the Spartans haven’t presented much of a challenge for the Lancers.

They did last week, however, when the teams met in what could be the start of an annual neighborhood rivalry game. While the host Lancers never trailed in the Dec. 12 contest, the spunky Spartans got as close as three points in the fourth quarter before falling 68-61.

The Los Altos High girls basketball team is off to its best start in more than a decade – and not because the Eagles have played a soft schedule.

Their 5-0 record includes wins over Palo Alto and Mountain View, which both play in the upper division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, and an Aragon squad that reached the Central Coast Section Division II final last winter.

MV boys win hoops opener

The Mountain View High boys basketball team tipped off its season with a lopsided win over Branham last week.

The host Spartans prevailed 58-26, holding the Bruins to a single point in the first quarter.
