Pinewood’s Hannah Jump lays up a shot in Friday’s victory over Menlo. The senior scored a game-high 35 points.

The Panthers dismantled Menlo 75-36 to break the first-place tie between them. The game was close for a quarter, but host Pinewood – which routed the Knights by 39 and 47 points last year – pulled away in the second period and the lead ballooned from there.

For the first three quarters of Friday’s game, the St. Francis High girls basketball team couldn’t make a shot. Layups rolled off the rim and jumpers clanked against the backboard or hit nothing but air.

Despite missing 46 of their 52 shots, the host Lancers entered the fourth period trailing Sacred Heart Cathedral by only nine points due to their dogged defense.

As soon as the Gunn High girls basketball team entered the Los Altos High gym, it was clear the Eagles had a distinct advantage in Friday night’s SCVAL El Camino Division opener. The visitors dressed just five players – seven fewer than Los Altos.

Still, Eagles coach Jaclyn Brode said she had an uneasy feeling about the game; would her team take the Titans lightly?
