St. Francis girls fall in NorCal quarterfinals

It was the kind of start the St. Francis High girls basketball team hoped for – a 15-5 lead on the road in the Northern California Division I quarterfinals. It didn’t last, however, as Bear Creek of Stockton rallied for a 64-59 win after altering its defense late in the first period.

“That kind of freaked us out,” Lancers coach Sami Pompei said of the Bruins’ switch from zone to man-to-man. “You could see the fear in the seniors – they didn’t want the season to end – and we got frazzled. Then we started going cold, missing free throws, layups and not executing on offense.”

Pinewood’s Kaitlyn Leung puts up a shot in Friday’s game.

In the regular season, the nationally ranked girls basketball teams from Pinewood School and Mitty High clearly showed they were a cut above the rest of the Central Coast Section. Friday night, Mitty left little doubt that it’s on a higher plane than Pinewood as well.

The top-seeded Monarchs routed the No. 2 Panthers 72-51 in the CCS Open Division final at Santa Clara University. Defending champ Mitty – ranked No. 1 nationally by MaxPreps – never trailed and led by double-digits most of the way.
