St. Francis girls eliminated by top-seeded team in NorCal semis

The St. Francis High girls basketball team proved no match for top-seeded Vanden last week in the semifinals of the Northern California Division II playoffs.

The fourth-seeded Lancers fell 77-42 to host Vanden of Fairfield March 14.

Foothill women fall in quarterfinals of state tourney

The Foothill College women’s basketball team got off to a fast start but couldn’t sustain it against Mt. San Antonio, the top seed from the south, which rallied for a 58-46 win in the quarterfinals of the state tournament March 10 in Livermore.

The Owls’ early six-point lead quickly evaporated, with the Mounties taking a 34-18 lead into halftime. Foothill, the fourth seed from the north, fell behind by 20 before cutting that deficit in half late in the game but got no closer.

After a close first half, the St. Francis High boys basketball team cruised past visiting Del Oro 75-57 Tuesday night (March 14) in the Northern California Division II semifinals.

Mia Grizelj’s buzzer-beating jumper in overtime not only saved the day for the St. Francis High girls basketball team – it also spared coach Brian Harrigan from reaching deep into his playbook.

“I was really glad, because I was running out of plays,” he said after the Lancers’ 59-57 home win over Sacramento Saturday in the Northern California Division II quarterfinals. “I don’t know if I had any more for the second overtime. I used them all up.”
