Mia Grizelj’s buzzer-beating jumper in overtime not only saved the day for the St. Francis High girls basketball team – it also spared coach Brian Harrigan from reaching deep into his playbook.

“I was really glad, because I was running out of plays,” he said after the Lancers’ 59-57 home win over Sacramento Saturday in the Northern California Division II quarterfinals. “I don’t know if I had any more for the second overtime. I used them all up.”

Pinewood girls battle back to beat Bishop O'Dowd

Like the first time these teams met this season, the Pinewood School girls struggled to make shots Friday against Bishop O’Dowd in the Northern California Open Division girls basketball quarterfinals. But unlike that December game in Oakland, the Panthers overcame their shooting slump to beat the Dragons 51-43.

Third-seeded Pinewood, trailing 27-22 at halftime, rallied in the third quarter against No. 6 O’Dowd. The host Panthers opened the quarter with a 7-0 run and went into the fourth up 37-33.

Third-quarter run fuels SF boys' win against Burbank

After a back-and-forth first half, the St. Francis High boys basketball team took over Saturday’s Northern California Division II quarterfinal game in the third quarter and never relinquished control.

The top-seeded Lancers beat Burbank of Sacramento 77-68, propelled by a 20-9 run in the third.

As time ticked down in Saturday’s Central Coast Section Division II boys basketball final and with their team safely ahead, the jubilant fans in the Mountain View High student section chanted: “I believe that we will win.”

Apt words for the Spartans – it’s been their mantra since the season began.
