New coach Field-Polisso has plan in place for St. Francis High girls basketball team

Hired more than two months ago, Sami Field-Polisso sometimes still can’t believe she is the new girls basketball coach at St. Francis High.

“I’m still pinching myself when I’m on campus and thinking, ‘Is this real?’” she said. “What an opportunity.”

Mountain View’s Eugene Liao is set to play in an all-star game featuring the region’s best Asian-American players.

Although he graduated in June, Mountain View High’s Eugene Liao still has one more high school basketball game to play.

He has been invited to participate in the inaugural NorCal Asian-American All-Star Game, scheduled Thursday at Cal State East Bay in Hayward. Liao is a member of the 12-player Senior All-Stars, who will take on the Undergrad All-Stars in a game slated to tip off at 7:30 p.m.

Midway through the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Northern California Division II final, the St. Francis High boys basketball team seemed well on its way to Sacramento for this weekend’s state championships. Jacob Mihanovic had just cut to the basket for a layin, pushing the Lancers’ lead to 69-60.

Then everything went sideways for top-seeded St. Francis.

The Pinewood School girls basketball team remained behind closed doors for nearly an hour after last week’s Northern California Open Division semifinal game, facing the realization that the season was over.

While some of that time was spent lamenting the loss – Cardinal Newman escaped Los Altos Hills with a 59-57 win after Pinewood missed two free throws in the waning seconds – there were feel-good moments as well.
