Third-quarter run fuels SF boys' win against Burbank

After a back-and-forth first half, the St. Francis High boys basketball team took over Saturday’s Northern California Division II quarterfinal game in the third quarter and never relinquished control.

The top-seeded Lancers beat Burbank of Sacramento 77-68, propelled by a 20-9 run in the third.

As time ticked down in Saturday’s Central Coast Section Division II boys basketball final and with their team safely ahead, the jubilant fans in the Mountain View High student section chanted: “I believe that we will win.”

Apt words for the Spartans – it’s been their mantra since the season began.

Up against the nation’s top-ranked team in Friday’s Central Coast Section Open Division girls basketball final, Pinewood School faced a daunting task even before the Panthers learned just hours before tip off that their point guard would not play.

Yet third-seeded Pinewood, undermanned and undersized, still made No. 1 Mitty sweat for its 65-57 win at Santa Clara University.

The Mountain View High boys basketball team entered the playoffs in unfamiliar territory – as a top seed for the first time in school history – and with all the pressure that comes with it.

So before Saturday’s opening game against Leland, coach Kevin Mack said he wondered whether his Spartans were “going to embrace the No. 1 seed or is it going to be a target on our back?”
