Pinewood’s Jaeden Bailey goes up for a shot against rival Woodside Priory last season.

Led by a new head coach and a slew of seniors, the Pinewood School boys basketball team is off to a fast start. The Panthers, slated to begin league play tonight, finished their preseason with a 6-3 record.

“It’s going well right now,” senior captain Jaeden Bailey said. “I mean, it’s only preseason, but we’ve been playing really well.”

Although less than thrilled with his team’s 5-5 start, Mountain View High girls basketball coach Xavier Cook isn’t discouraged by it.

“We’ve played a tough non-conference schedule to prepare for league,” said Cook, whose team is scheduled to open SCVAL De Anza Division play this week. “We’re not in a bad position – the league is wide open – but we don’t have an easy game from here on out. I still think we can be in the top four if we match (the other teams’) intensity.”

Los Altos last week beat Woodside, Soledad and Independence, improving to 4-2 and showing the kind of progress that pleases coach Jaclyn Brode.
