After recovering from a slow start to tie last week’s Central Coast Section Division I quarterfinal game by halftime, then hanging with No. 2 Sequoia for the third quarter, things went sideways for the 10th-seeded Los Altos High girls basketball team.
“The fourth quarter didn’t go our way in any sense,” said coach Jaclyn Brode, whose Eagles fell 48-34 Feb. 19.
Los Altos was outscored 16-7 during a disastrous final quarter in which one player left the game with an injury, another received a technical foul and the Eagles shot 2-for-5 from the foul line.
Brode was most concerned about guard Mone Sekiguchi, who she said hyperextended her knee pursuing a loose ball midway through the fourth.
“She plays with so much heart and obvious physical sacrifice that I think her going down affected our mental game more than we realized,” the coach said.
The host Cherokees scored the next seven points to put the game away.
Jamie Baum finished with 15 points to pace Los Altos and Mahika Gupta added nine.
The Eagles (19-7 overall) won two games to get this far, beating visiting Independence 48-37 Feb. 15 and host Cupertino 56-45 the next day.
“These girls have a lot to feel good about,” Brode said. “They experienced many successes throughout the season and they grew into a tight-knit bunch with real love for one another.”
