The under-18 boys team from Los Altos-based NorCal Aquatics swam circles around the competition at last month’s WinterFest Water Polo Tournament in Orange County.

The squad dominated its division – posting a 5-0 record – and routed Redondo Beach 17-6 in the championship game. NorCal, which trains at Los Altos High, outscored its opponents 73-27 over the three-day event.

“We had a small roster,” said coach Seth Tasman, who also guides the Los Altos boys varsity team, “but our athletes worked hard and played great defense all tournament.”

NorCal brought just nine players to the tourney.

Along with its strong performance in the final, Tasman mentioned NorCal’s decisive victory over rival club West Valley as “one of the main highlights” of WinterFest. NorCal whipped West Valley 16-6 in the quarterfinals and crushed Kingsburg 13-4 in the semis.

In the title game, Los Altos High juniors Eric Warmoth and Kyle Sandell “played phenomenal offense and defense,” according to Tasman, adding that “goalie Jack Gregov was a monster in the goal throughout the entire tournament.” The Homestead High senior surrendered just 5.4 goals per game.
