Local water polo teams advance in CCS

The boys and girls water polo teams from Los Altos and St. Francis highs extended their seasons by winning Central Coast Section quarterfinal games Saturday.

The Los Altos boys, the third seed in CCS Division II, routed No. 6 Valley Christian 17-7 at Aptos High. Eight Eagles scored, led by Matt Orton’s four goals. Goalie Cameron Putnam made 12 saves.

Los Altos (20-5) was scheduled to meet No. 2 Menlo (17-8) Tuesday, after the Town Crier’s press deadline. The winner takes on No. 1 Sacred Heart Prep (17-10) or No. 4 Soquel (16-8) in Saturday’s final at Independence High in San Jose.

The Los Altos girls, the No. 2 seed in CCS Division II, cruised to a 12-3 win over Valley Christian at Aptos. Olivia Santiago paced the Eagles with five goals. Nicole Larsen made 11 saves.

Los Altos (18-7) is slated to face No. 3 St. Ignatius (17-11) in the semifinals 5:30 p.m. today at Gunn. The winner meets No. 1 Sacred Heart Prep (21-5) or No. 4 Burlingame (14-9) Saturday at Independence.

The St. Francis boys and girls are the top seeds in their respective Division I playoffs.

The boys beat No. 8 Serra 16-6, getting three goals apiece from Peter Simon and Patrick Goodenough. The Lancers (17-6) are set to play No. 4 Leland (23-4) 7 p.m. today at Serra. The winner goes against No. 2 Bellarmine (19-6) or No. 6 Palo Alto (16-12) Saturday in the final at Independence.

The St. Francis girls beat No. 8 Los Gatos 8-4 behind three goals from Nikole Ferrari. The Lancers (20-6) were scheduled to face No. 4 Menlo-Atherton (14-11) Tuesday for the right to play in Saturday’s final at Independence versus No. 2 Leland (22-5) or No. 3 Gunn (21-6).
