On the first day of practice for the 43rd annual Charlie Wedemeyer High School All-Star Football Game, the coaches for the North offered their players two ways to approach Saturday’s contest. They could treat it like an exhibition game or more like one that counts.

“They’re leaving it up to the kids, which is great,” said Mountain View High linebacker Race Modderman, one of eight local players on the squad. “We can go out and have fun or try to stick it to the South and beat them.”

Texas is in Kai Jarmon’s blood – well, more like his bloodline. His dad, two cousins and aunt attended the University of Texas, and his grandparents met there as students.

Those family ties to Texas include a shared love for the Longhorns football team.

Egan head coach Wayne Smith talks football with players Grady Hofmann, left, and Michael Marras during a recent game.

There are many reasons Wayne Smith has served as a youth flag football coach in Los Altos the past seven seasons, but money isn’t one of them.

“Every year, the coaches are paid to coach the teams; Coach Wayne does not accept any money,” said Amy Hofmann, who has coached with Smith and has three sons who played for him. “He does it all for the kids.”
