Saturday’s Central Coast Section Open Division II football final came down to bold moves – Serra High made them throughout the game and St. Francis High’s daring attempt at the end came up just short.

After scoring a touchdown on Reed Vettel’s 19-yard pass to Evan Williams with 1:26 left, the Lancers opted for the two-point conversion to pull ahead of the Padres rather than kick the extra point to tie them. Vettel, rolling right with pressure coming, threw a pass to fullback Opeti Fangupo that fell incomplete.

Lancers whip Wilcox in CCS opener

St. Francis High’s Darrell Page, trying to break a tackle against Wilcox, scored five touchdowns Friday.

Only Darrell Page’s name will appear in the St. Francis High football record book for rushing for five touchdowns Friday in the Lancers’ 51-27 playoff rout of Wilcox, but it really was a team effort.

St. Francis’ offensive line, tight ends and fullbacks cleared the way for Page – often opening humongous holes for him to run through – while receivers held their blocks downfield to help the speedy junior get past the last line of defense.

St. Francis heads to football playoffs

St. Francis High is the lone local football team to make the postseason, landing the third seed in the Central Coast Section Open Division II playoffs.

The Lancers (7-3) are set to host No. 6 Wilcox (7-3) in the quarterfinals 7 p.m. Friday. The winner takes on No. 2 Aragon (9-1) or No. 7 Westmont (7-3) the following weekend in the semifinals.
