A preseason poll of West Catholic Athletic League football coaches projects St. Francis High to place sixth out of the eight teams in the rugged WCAL.
The Lancers were predicted to finish in the same spot last year; they placed fifth (4-3), then claimed the Central Coast Section Division II title.
Coaches picked Serra to win the WCAL this season just ahead of defending champ Bellarmine. The poll, released last week, indicates Valley Christian will place third, St. Ignatius fourth and Mitty fifth.
Five Lancers made the coaches’ list of players to watch: running back/defensive back Alex Andrighetto, defensive back/ running back Landon Baty, defensive lineman/running back Jack Casarez, offensive tackle Ryan Popolizio and linebacker/running back/tight end John Powers.
St. Francis, under new head coach Greg Calcagno, is scheduled to open its season 7 p.m. Friday at Oak Grove. The Lancers are slated to begin league play 2 p.m. Oct. 5 at St. Ignatius.
