LAUMC hosts benefit for Alzheimer’s Association

Los Altos United Methodist Church has scheduled a fundraising concert, “Get Your Sparkle Back,” 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the sanctuary, 655 Magdalena Ave.

Organist T. Paul Rosas and the vocal trio of Casie Walker, Laura Lang-Ree and Don Gustafson will perform classical, jazz and Broadway-style songs. Guest organist Carolyn Lamcke will join Rosas for an organ/piano duet inspired by three Bay Area locations: Muir Woods, Bodega Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Nationally acclaimed local composer Sondra Clark wrote the piece.

Admission is free, but free-will donations will be accepted. Proceeds support the Alzheimer’s Association.

Alpha Course offers intro to Christianity

Union Presbyterian Church has scheduled an introductory Alpha Course 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday in the church’s Landels Room, 858 University Ave., Los Altos.

The class, designed for those curious about Christian beliefs and faith in God, will continue on Thursday nights with a series of DVD presentations followed by roundtable discussions.

According to organizers, the class offers an opportunity to explore Christianity in a relaxed setting over 10 sessions. Questions covered include: Why do Christians believe what the Bible says? What do Christians believe about evolution and the creation of the world? Does God really exist? Is this all there is to life, or is there more after death?

More than 18 million people worldwide – from many different backgrounds, religions and viewpoints – have taken the Alpha Course. Some have gone to church all their lives but feel they never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. All are invited to attend.

A light meal will be served.
