Los Altos Christian School students react with enthusiasm and applause, left, as Project Director Mark Plenge takes a swing into the wall of the school to kick-start the construction and renovations scheduled this summer.
Los Altos Christian Schools recently hosted a groundbreaking ceremony – or rather, a wall-breaking ceremony – to signal the start of construction on a science lab and theater and the renovation of the gym.
“These renovations will make a great school even better,” said Principal Susan Goff. “We will be able to incorporate more hands-on science, which is critical in Silicon Valley, and allow for more enrichment of the arts and sports during the day and after school. This is an exciting time to be at Los Altos Christian Schools.”
Construction began last week and is scheduled for completion before the end of the summer, according to school officials.
Plans for the science lab include individual stations where students can conduct hands-on experiments, using state-of-the-art microscopes and interactive whiteboards. The theater will house the latest in audio-video equipment, lighting and curtains. The gym’s facelift includes new equipment and bleachers, along with brightly painted walls. It will accommodate a regulation-size basketball court and two volleyball courts. A ribbon-cutting event is scheduled Aug. 20.
The Altos Christian Foundation contributed the majority of funds for the project, and school families and alumni raised more than $150,000 in support in six weeks.
“This is quite a testimonial given the short time and the size of our school. God can do many things when we step out in faith and prayer,” said Mark Plenge, project manager and school parent.
The school community sponsored fundraisers such as a bake sale and a walkathon. School families, teachers and alumni purchased tiles as well. In addition, the school received a few envelopes with quarters in them from elementary students.
“We have amazing children with big hearts at our school,” said Wendy Cadeddu, lead fundraiser and parent. “This project is for them.”
