MVLA students show improvement in statewide test scores

Students in the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District showed marked improvement on the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium test, conducted by the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress system.

At Los Altos High, the percentage of all tested students who met or exceeded English standards totaled 81 percent, up from 70 percent last year. Math scores also showed improvement, rising from 67 percent to 69 percent.

Mentor Tutor Connection to hold informational open house

Mentor Tutor Connection has scheduled an informational open house for potential volunteers 5:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the MVLA District Office, 1299 Bryant Ave., Mountain View.

The nonprofit organization is recruiting volunteers to serve as tutors and mentors in Los Altos and Mountain View schools. All volunteers must be high school graduates.

LASD trustees schedule office hours

The Los Altos School District Board of Trustees has scheduled open office hours noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 27 at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.

According to Trustee Bryan Johnson, the intent of the session is to “increase communication with our broader community,” including residents who live within district boundaries but do not have children currently attending district schools.

Public forum addresses 10th LASD campus

Creative Facilities Solutions has scheduled a community forum on selecting a site for a 10th Los Altos School District campus 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.

Creative Facilities Solutions comprises district parents, community leaders and elected officials who hope to start a dialogue about the best plan for maximizing existing public land to create a 10th school site.

MVHS Carbon-Free Commute recruits volunteers

Mountain View High School’s Carbon-Free Commute supporters seek volunteers one morning a month to help encourage students to walk, bike or take the bus to school.

Abandoning their cars for a day would boost students’ opportunities for exercise, reduce pollution and mitigate traffic and parking congestion at Mountain View High.

Yikes Tikes! holds open house

Yikes Tikes!, a Los Altos preschool, has scheduled an open house 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the school, 1577 Carob Lane.

According to instructors, Yikes Tikes! is a tuition-free co-op providing an “inclusive learning environment” for children ages 2 to just under 5.
