Nonprofit group seeks laptops for students

EqOpTech, founded by Los Altos High School junior Terence Lee, seeks donations of functioning laptops (Windows or Mac) with appropriate power adapters for students in need at Almond School.

The nonprofit EqOpTech works to connect students with limited technology access to the resources they need to do schoolwork at home.

MVHS parents host dinner concert

The Mountain View High School Instrumental Music Parents Association has scheduled its third annual “Spaghetti and Strings” dinner concert 6-8:30 p.m. March 22 at Mountain View High School in the small gym, 3535 Truman Ave.

General admission will include a three-course Italian dinner catered by The Pasta Market at 6:30 p.m. Performances by orchestra ensemble students will follow at 7 p.m.

Foothill talk focuses on search for life

UC Berkeley scientist Dan Werthimer is scheduled to discuss “Is Anyone Out There Among the Stars? The Hundred-Million-Dollar Breakthrough Listen Project” 7 p.m. March 15 at Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College, 12345 S. El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.

Part of the 17th annual Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, the illustrated, nontechnical presentation will cover the possibility of other intelligent life in the universe. Werthimer will address whether researchers can detect radio, infrared or light signals from alien civilizations and whether current and future projects searching for such signals, including the new $100 million Breakthrough Prize Foundation Listen project, may provide an answer.

Loyola K-Kids launch eyeglasses drive

The Loyola School K-Kids Club, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Los Altos, is collecting eyeglasses for its annual “Share Old Spectacles” drive. Students hope to collect more than 1,200 pairs of eyeglasses during this year’s campaign.

The K-Kids Club, comprising second- through sixth-graders, has collected more than 1,000 pairs of glasses each year with help from the public and local storeowners, who offer space for collection buckets.

Mentor Tutor Connection seeks volunteer tutors and mentors

Foothill College hosts astronomy lecture

Astronomer Chris Impey is scheduled to discuss “Beyond: Our Future in Space” 7 p.m. today in Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College, 12345 S. El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.

Part of the 17th annual Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, Impey’s illustrated, nontechnical talk will review the history and landmarks of the international space program, give a snapshot of the current situation and plot the trajectory of the future of space travel.
