LA resident honored as distinguished alumnus

Los Altos resident Neil Bonke received the Golden Knight Award from his alma mater, Clarkson University, earlier this month.

Bonke was one of five alumni to receive this year’s award, which was presented during an alumni reunion July 12-13 in Potsdam, N.Y., on the university’s campus.

According to a press release from Clarkson, the Golden Knight Award is the college’s “most prestigious alumni award” and is given to alumni who distinguish themselves either through service to the college or through career achievement.

Bonke earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial distribution from Clarkson in 1964.

He is the retired chairman and CEO of Electroglas Inc., a manufacturer of semiconductor test equipment.

Bonke and his wife, Karen, endowed a professorship for entrepreneurship and innovation at Clarkson in 2008.

Kids’ science fair debuts on Downtown Green

An informal science fair for children ages 4-8 is scheduled 2-4 p.m. Aug 17 on the Downtown Green on Third Street between Main and State streets in Los Altos.

The inaugural Los Altos Science on the Green event will offer kids the opportunity to share a science topic of their choosing with the community.

Participants can bring a poster board with a drawing and description of the topic. Although preparing a topic is recommended, it is not required. Possible topics include why the world is round, why plants grow and why the sun is so bright.

The Los Altos School District also will host hands-on science project booths integrating art, science and engineering for children and adults to explore.
