MVLA hosts Math Night for future students

The Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District has scheduled its second Math Night for the families of future high schoolers 6:30 p.m. Nov. 27 in Los Altos High’s Eagle Theater, 201 Almond Ave.

The event – designed for the families of kindergartners through eighth-graders who will attend Mountain View High or Los Altos High – will provide information on math pathways available to students and details on computer science and engineering courses. Families can learn more about how courses connect to different career paths in science, technology, engineering, arts and math fields.

K-Kids Club seeks donations of toiletries

The Loyola School K-Kids Club, sponsored by the Los Altos Kiwanis Club, is collecting toiletries for the Community Services Agency of Mountain View and Los Altos.

The club needs new toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, tissues and other toiletries.

To donate, drop items off at the K-Kids collection barrel outside the Loyola School office, 770 Berry Ave., Los Altos.

Flex College Prep sponsors admissions seminar

Flex College Prep is scheduled to host a free educational seminar, Extracurricular Development: Standing Out from the Competition, 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at 4600 El Camino Real, Suite 201, Los Altos.

The seminar will cover the relevance of extracurricular activities for college admissions and how to incorporate extracurricular activities into an application.

Admission is free and open to all.

Student invites literary magazine submissions

Los Altos High School student Mira Chiruvolu seeks submissions for The Hive, a literary magazine she recently launched to highlight and discover new writers, artists and authors from all over the world.

All genres and forms of writing (fiction, poetry, creative writing and journalism) and art (for the website and cover) are eligible for submission.

Living Classroom needs docents

Volunteer docents are needed for the Los Altos School District’s Living Classroom program, which delivers hands-on, garden-based lessons to students.

Docent training is scheduled Monday mornings in the iLearn Studio at 201 Covington Road.

No experience is necessary.

Los Altos Art Docents recruits volunteers

The Los Altos Art Docents program seeks volunteers to help teach art in local classrooms.

In the past year, docents taught 799 lessons, trained 10 new docents, produced four art shows, participated in several community outreach events and created six new lessons.

No prior experience is necessary. Volunteers don’t need to live in Los Altos or have a child in the school district.

MVLA Scholars seeks college prep mentors

MVLA Scholars, a program of Los Altos Community Foundation, seeks local residents willing to commit a year to shepherd high school juniors and seniors through the college application and scholarship process.

The students are in the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, designed to prepare students for success at four-year universities.

Volunteer mentors meet the AVID students in class once a week and may spend additional hours outside of class. Each mentor will support one or two students.
