LAHS issues call for volunteers

The Los Altos High School Parent, Teacher and Student Association seeks volunteers for the week of Aug. 13.

Two-hour shifts are available throughout the week to help with textbook and laptop distribution, freshmen orientation day and the staff appreciation breakfast, among other activities.

The PTSA is also looking for volunteers to assist in the office, staff the lunchtime pizza cart and help with the snack bar throughout the school year.

JustREAD seeks volunteer tutors

The nonprofit JustREAD is recruiting volunteer tutors for the 2018-2019 school year.

The organization recently launched a new math program, JustMATH, that provides remedial math tutoring for fourth- and fifth-graders throughout the school year.

Downtown Green hosts math mixer

Los Altos Friends for Life has scheduled its second social mixer 4-6 p.m. Aug. 12 on the Downtown Green, the pop-up park on Third Street between Main and State streets.

The event – designed for families with children ages 1-5 – will feature the theme “Math, Music and Motion.”

Hunger program solicits donations

The Ecumenical Hunger Program in East Palo Alto seeks donations for students for the coming school year.

Items needed include backpacks, school supplies, toiletries and gift cards.

Los Altos Art Docents recruits volunteers

The Los Altos Art Docents program seeks volunteers to help teach art in local classrooms.

In the past year, docents taught 799 lessons, trained 10 new docents, produced four art shows, participated in several community outreach events, created six new lessons and made major revisions to three lessons and minor tweaks to four.

No prior experience is necessary. Volunteers don’t need to live in Los Altos or have a child in the school district.

MVLA Scholars seeks college prep mentors

MVLA Scholars, a program of Los Altos Community Foundation, seeks local residents willing to commit a year to shepherd high school juniors and seniors through the college application and scholarship process.

The students are in the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, designed to prepare students for success at four-year universities.

Volunteer mentors meet the AVID students in class once a week and may spend additional hours outside of class. Each mentor will support one or two students.
