Schools Briefs: Art, college prep volunteers needed

Los Altos Art Docents recruits volunteers

The Los Altos Art Docents program seeks volunteers to help teach art in local classrooms.

In the past year, docents taught 799 lessons, trained 10 new docents, produced four art shows, participated in several community outreach events, created six new lessons and made major revisions to three lessons and minor tweaks to four.

No prior experience is necessary. Volunteers don’t need to live in Los Altos or have a child in the school district.

MVLA Scholars seeks college prep mentors

MVLA Scholars, a program of Los Altos Community Foundation, seeks local residents willing to commit a year to shepherd high school juniors and seniors through the college application and scholarship process.

The students are in the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, designed to prepare students for success at four-year universities.

Volunteer mentors meet the AVID students in class once a week and may spend additional hours outside of class. Each mentor will support one or two students.
