Loyola K-Kids launch eyeglasses drive

The Loyola School K-Kids Club, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Los Altos, is collecting eyeglasses for its annual “Share Old Spectacles” drive. Students hope to collect more than 1,200 pairs of eyeglasses during this year’s campaign.

The K-Kids Club, comprising second- through sixth-graders, has collected more than 1,000 pairs of glasses each year with help from the public and local storeowners, who offer space for collection buckets.

The glasses are sent to Direct Relief International in Goleta, where they are repaired, prescriptions identified and distributed to those who need them in the U.S. and around the world.

Los Altos collection boxes are located at Loyola School, 770 Berry Ave.; Heritage Bank of Commerce, 419 S. San Antonio Road; Ciana Salon, 227 Plaza Central; Eye Lite Optical, 286 Main St.; Meyer’s Learning Center, 365 First St. Unit D; and the Los Altos Town Crier, 138 Main St. Mountain View collection boxes are available at Eye City Optometry, 1350 Grant Road No. 17; and Alan Clark Optometry, 644 San Antonio Road.

Mentor Tutor Connection seeks volunteers

Mentor Tutor Connection has scheduled a volunteer open house and luncheon noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District boardroom, 1299 Bryant Ave., Mountain View.

The nonprofit organization, which has provided mentors and tutors for local students for 20 years, seeks mentors for high school students and tutors for students in kindergarten to eighth grade.

Teens and their volunteer adult mentors do everything from bowling to hiking, cooking and going to movies. Primarily they talk – and listen – to one another. The relationships are designed to help struggling students build self-esteem and find positive direction in their lives.

Tutors assist with reading, writing, math and other subjects taught in Los Altos and Mountain View elementary and middle schools. They work one-on-one or with a small group under the supervision of a teacher once a week for one hour at a specific time during the school day.

Open house attendees are not obligated to volunteer. All volunteers must be high school graduates.

Registration is recommended.

To register and for more information, call 641-2821 or visit mentortutorconnection.org.
