Accolades continue to sound off for members of Los Altos High instrumental music program

Despite the conclusion of a marching band season in which Los Altos High School garnered 15 trophies, awards continue to pour into the Los Altos High School instrumental music program.

The California Band Directors Association announced that senior Candice Shih, sophomore Jinsue Choi and junior David Elliott from Los Altos High School have been selected through audition to be participants in the 1997 California All-State Honor Band. The All-State Band is held in conjunction with the California Band Directors Association annual convention which will be convening in Bakersfield this weekend.

Students from more than 290 high schools will be represented. Conductors for the 1997 All-State Bands will be Johan de Meij, world-class composer from Voorburg, Holland, and Elliott Del Borgo, another world class composer from Port Chester, N.Y. Both composers will conduct the students in the premiere of original new works.

On Jan. 25, the Los Altos High School Jazz Band performed at the Folsom Jazz Festival in Folsom, Calif., and received a rating of "superior" from all three judges. Individual students were presented medals for outstanding musicianship, including junior Joshua Mandel, senior Stephen Bolles and junior Peter Eames.

Senior Dan Smith and sophomore Jinsue Choi were accepted through audition to perform in the Santa Clara County Band Directors Association Honor Band. The president of this association is the director of bands at Los Altos High School, Don Miller.

The ensemble was conducted the weekend of Jan. 17-19 by Eric Hammer, professor of music at the University of Pacific Conservatory of Music. The concert took place at San Jose State University.

Seniors Eric Basart and Candice Shih, junior David Elliott and freshman Sharon Park were accepted into the California Orchestra Directors Association All-State Honor Orchestra. The orchestra performed under the baton of William Johnson, professor of music at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, from Dec. 12-14.

Sophomore Jinsue Choi and freshman Gilbert Hwang were accepted through audition into the California Music Educators Association All-State Honor Orchestra, which will be held in Pasadena, Calif., on April 3-5.

The students who earned this recognition are taught by Don Miller and Vickie Christensen, music teachers at Los Altos High School.
