LAHS to hold writers conference

Los Altos High School's 12th annual writer's conference will be held through next Tuesday. Students will have an opportunity to hear one or more of the 17 published writers who will be participating in the conference.

This year's group of writers represents a variety of disciplines, including Stanford Jones lecturers and Stegner Fellows, poets, short story writers, journalists, novelists and newspaper columnists.

Among the authors speaking this year are Loretta Green, Joanne Jacobs, Ann Killion and Bud Geracie of the San Jose Mercury News, poet and performer David Sharp, local children's book author Shirley Climo, science writer Barry Evans and journalist Anne McCarroll.

The writers will share their work and writing experiences with the students. The conference format is designed to encourage a dialogue between writers and the students in the intimate setting of individual classrooms.

Loyola science fair scheduled

Loyola School will present its fourth annual science fair 1-3 p.m. this coming Saturday at the campus, 770 Berry Ave., Los Altos. Students from kindergarten through sixth grade will display their exhibits to the public. Included will be a small animal exhibit and hands-on activities, as well as an environmental display spobnsored by Nor Cal Waste Systems.

Student art show at Hillview

The Los Altos Art Docents will hold their annual student art show, featuring artwork by every student in the Los Altos Elementary Scbool District, Thursday through Sunday at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave. Children, parents, relatives, friends and the general public are welcome. Admission is free.

Gallery hours are 3-5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 1-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Artwork by Blach and Egan intermediate school students and Los Altos and Mountain View high school students will also be on display.

On Saturday, from 1-3 p.m., children are invited to participate in fun and creative hands-on art activities.

The art show is presented by the Los Altos Art Docents, with support from the Los Altos Parks and Recreation Department, the Los Altos Art Club, and the PTAs of the elementary schools. The art docents are volunteers who, for 26 years, have been bringing appreciation and bands-on art lessons into the classrooms of all six Los Altos elementary schools.

Mountain View alumni picnic

The Mountain View Union High School "Eagle" alumni picnic will take place Oct. 4 at Cuesta Park in Mountain View.

Ex-Awalt and current Mountain View High School alumni are invited to attend. Preliminary meetings are taking place on the following dates:

April 9, May 14: 7 p.m. in the Mountain View High School Faculty Lounge.

Aug. 13: 7 p.m. in the Mountain View High School quad.

Sept. 10: 7 p.m. at the Mountain View High School faculty lounge.

Teen job fairs seek businesses

Businesses interested in hiring teens for summer work are invited to participate in a 1997 Teen Job Fair to be held April 10 at Los Altos High School. The event will run from 2-3:30 p.m.

More than 400 students and 30 businesses are expected to attend the job fair.

There is no fee for business participation.

The Teen Job Fair is sponsored by the Mountain View Recreation Division and the Los Altos Recreation Department in conjunction with the work experience programs at Mountain View and Los Altos high schools. For registration information, call Jack Smith at 903-6403.

MV-LA foundation seeks volunteer

The Mountain View-Los Altos High School Foundation needs a volunteer to track prospective donors. The foundation, which raises more than $100,000 annually for district programs not funded by the normal budget.

The volunteer will work with the database chairman to perfect a database of foundation donors. It is preferable that the volunteer be familiar the with the program "4th Dimension," but it is not essential. Expertise in setting up Web pages is also desirable.

LAHS students prepare for robotics competition

A Los Altos High School team is preparing to participate in the US First Robotics competition. The competition takes place at Disney's World's Epcot, April 10-12.

The competition involves building a robot which can score with a ball in a sporting event. For example, one year the robot had to score the most goals in a soccer game while another robot defended.

The team is sponsored by NASA and engineers will help educate players regarding building of a robot.
