Bill Smith, a social studies teacher, has been selected by students at Los Altos High School as Staff Member of the Month. Students commended Smith for his willingness to spend extra time helping students.
For 11 years, Smith taught at Awalt High School and transferred to Los Altos High School 16 years ago when the school closed.
Smith can be found participating in almost every aspect of school life: co-chair of the social studies department, coordinator of the student assistance program, assistant athletic director, one of two senior class advisors, girls water polo coach, and boys and girls diving coach.
He has also served as chairman of the school unity team, has been a member of the Shared decision making team and has been the chief negotiator for the district teachers association and a member of the district budget committee and the benefits committee.
For 27 years, Smith has been commuting to Los Altos from his home in Aptos and he can usually be found opening the school during the early hours of the morning.
He has a daughter who is a freshman at Western Baptist College in Oregon and a 13-year-old son at home.
He has been active in his son's sports program and has coached his basketball team.
Swimming, golf, camping and reading are spare-time activities he enjoys.
