Children's Corner of Los Altos has been named a "1997 Blue Ribbon Child Care Provider for Santa Clara County," one of six preschools and day care centers to earn the distinction.
The honor, bestowed upon the preschool by the county's Month of the Young Child Planning Committee, is based on the school's accreditation for quality child care and its flexibility in offering care on a contract or drop-in basis.
The county committee was appointed to give recognition to quality child care providers in light of the Month of the Young Child, which is this month.
Office manager Stephanie Freebairn also noted the committee was impressed with the teacher-to-child ratio at Children's Corner. The school operates at six-to-seven children per one teacher for the school's very youngest children, starting at 2 years, and at seven-to-eight students per one instructor for older children, starting at about 4 years.
"It's an honor to be chosen and it's also a pat on the back that you're doing a good job," said Barbara Driscoll, president and chairwoman of the board of directors at Children's Corner.
County Supervisor Joe Simitian will be presenting a certificate honoring the preschool today, and he will participate in some preschool activities.
Children's Corner, started through the American Association of University Women in 1979, has operated out of Hillview Community Center about 15 years, according to Freebairn.
The school was accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs two years ago. More than 225 children are currently enrolled at the school, she said.
