National Merit Program honors more than 80 MVLA students

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has given special recognition to 33 Los Altos and 53 Mountain View high school students.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is the largest national testing program, with more than 1.5 million students eligible annually.

The 2010 competition began last fall when the students as juniors took the PSAT/NMSQT, an examination that compares the reading analysis, math problem solving and writing skills of students nationwide.

The program recently announced those who qualified as semifinalists, the highest recognition possible, and commended students on that test.

Semifinalists for the Class of 2010:

Los Altos High School: Aksai Bapa, Ancy Dow, Edward Gu, Erin Hicks, Angela Liu, Sahil Luthra, Shefali Luthra, Katelyn Stangl and Ke Wang.

Selection committee members, college admissions officers and high school counselors evaluate each student’s academic record, SAT scores, participation and leadership in school and community activities, essay and teacher recommendations to select the finalists. Finalists are eligible for one of the National Merit corporate- or college-sponsored $2,500 scholarships, awarded in spring 2010.
