Synica, a local teen band, won first place at the third annual Battle of the Bands Jan. 20.

Hosted by the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center, the competition featured nine Bay Area bands. Synica’s members include Los Altos High students Matthew Baum and Simon Burdick and Gunn High’s Arjun Srivastava and Colin Jaeger.

Synica is an instrumental, progressive metal band that takes inspiration from Chon, Polyphia and Intervals. At the competition, Synica performed two original pieces that will be released on its upcoming extended-play recording.

In the first round of the Battle of the Bands, a panel of five musicians gave feedback after each group’s performance. The judges then selected two bands to advance, and the audience voted for a third. Synica ranked first.

Synica earned $750 in cash and prizes, which made their win even sweeter, band members said.
