A student-organized bake sale at Yew Chung International School generated more than $1,000 for Hurricane Harvey victims.

Students at Yew Chung International School in Mountain View raised more than $1,000 for Hurricane Harvey survivors by mobilizing their classmates to host a bake sale at school.

The Yew Chung fourth-graders wondered what they could do to help hurricane victims, proposing fundraisers such as a bake sale or a lemonade stand.

They ultimately chose the bake sale, the proceeds of which will benefit the 40 families of the Mandarin Immersion Magnet School in Houston who were displaced by the storm. All funds will be used to supply the families with clothing, food and reimbursement for home rebuilding expenses.

“I’m so proud of our kids – they really took the initiative to give back to those in need,” said Yew Chung parent Jo Wood. “My daughter is starting to learn the power of community and the importance of empathy.”
