The blender bike is among the activities Los Altos High School’s Green Team Club has scheduled next week as part of the school’s Earth Week events.
Students will have the opportunity to hop on the bicycle and pedal it to power a blender that makes smoothies.
In honor of Earth Day, celebrated April 22 this year, the club plans to host an array of activities Monday through April 20 to raise students’ awareness of the environment and how to protect it.
“We’re trying to create a culture where sustainable living is the norm, even if it’s just for one week,” said senior Sarah Chang, Green Team co-president.
The Green Team has chosen a specific environmental theme for each day of the week: Meatless Monday, Renewable Energy Tuesday, Waste Management Wednesday, Sustainable Living Thursday and Pollution Friday.
Activities for students are scheduled during lunch each day that relate to the theme of the day and promote environmentalism.
The club has invited GreenTown Los Altos, a local nonprofit organization, and California Water Service Co. to each host a table at the events. Representatives from the organizations will speak to students.
Green Team members hope the week’s worth of activities inspire students to take action when it comes to saving the environment.
“My vision is one where students are aware that it’s Earth Week and the campus feels centered on environmentalism and wherever you look, there’s a reminder to make sustainability a priority,” Chang said.
