The Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District named Los Altos High junior Owen MacKenzie and Mountain View High junior Tejas Thvar May Students of the Month.
MacKenzie, a member of Los Altos High’s cross-country team, was the second-fastest junior at a recent state-level competition. He set records of 4:19 in the mile and 9:20 in the 2-mile race.
When he’s not on the track, MacKenzie is the lead singer, bassist and rhythm guitarist for the band Shark Cops, which raised more than $350 to purchase eight guitars to donate to The View Teen Center in Mountain View.
He also serves as expansion team coordinator for One Dollar For Life, a nonprofit organization that fundraises to build classrooms, clinics and other small-scale projects in developing countries.
District trustees honored Thvar for his academic and philanthropic work. He founded a nonprofit group, Education for All, through which he donates water filters to hurricane victims in Puerto Rico. He is also a member of a variety of school clubs.
Thvar takes Advanced Placement U.S. History, two AP Physics classes, AP Spanish IV and American Literature Honors.
He plans to attend a four-year university and study electrical engineering and computer science.
