The Los Altos School District Board of Trustees has scheduled a public meeting to discuss the possibility of entering a solar power purchase agreement that would culminate in the installation of photovoltaic systems at district schools. The hearing is slated 7 p.m. Monday at the district office, 201 Covington Road, Los Altos.
At a March board meeting, trustees discussed the possibility of undertaking a solar project this year to take advantage of current PG&E rates, which are being phased out. A solar project built now would be grandfathered in under those rates for the next 10 years. Although trustees did not commit the district to a solar project at that time, they opted to move forward with a request for proposals.
Should the district choose to enter a power purchase agreement, a third-party developer would pay for and own the solar system located on district property but agree to sell the electricity back to the district at a fixed rate. Such an arrangement does not require bond funding, because the third party would fund construction and installation of the system.
