Students in Mountain View High School’s Instrumental Music program have been invited to perform in the 2019 New Year’s Day parade and festival in London.
In a ceremony at the school March 25, the Lord Mayor of Westminster Steve Summers formally invited the Spartan Marching Band and Color Guard to participate in the parade, and the Wind Ensemble to perform in one of the festival’s concerts.
Dressed in his mayoral regalia, Summers presented the written invitation to Mountain View High music directors Jason Kneebone and Dana McDonnell.
Summers presented gifts to the marching band drum majors and color guard captain, and to special guests Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District Trustee Sanjay Dave, Mountain View Mayor Ken Rosenberg and Principal David Grissom.
“Being invited to this event is a great honor and motivation to take our bands to the next level,” McDonnell said. “I’m excited about working with our students over the next year and a half to prepare for the parade and festival.”
During the March 25 event, the Winter Percussion ensemble presented its 2017 competition show, “One Foot in Front of the Other,” and the Winter Guard ensemble performed its 2017 competition show, “Caught.” The music program recognized special donors Judi Fan and Bob Reay, whose donation enabled the purchase of new uniforms for the marching band in 2015 and have inspired increased parent support for the Instrumental Music Parents Association.
The ensemble traveling to London will include current members of the Spartan Marching Band and Color Guard as well as incoming members who join the ensemble in 2018.
“This is a great opportunity for our program to perform on an international stage,” Kneebone said. “It’s also really good for music education. This is the best kind of diplomacy. If you’re involved with music at Graham, Blach, Crittenden or elsewhere in the MVHS district, you have a place in the Spartan music program and would have the opportunity to travel to London with us.”
