First and Main parking lot closes Monday

The intersection of State and First streets isn’t the only thing Los Altos city officials will close to traffic after this weekend’s 34th annual Arts & Wine Festival.

When city crews resume work on the First Street streetscape project Monday (July 15) by closing the State and First streets intersection for at least six weeks, City Manager Marcia Somers said they will also close the dirt parking lot at the corner of First and Main streets – for good.

Somers told the Town Crier that the closure of the lot is necessary because its lone access point is at the soon-to-be-closed intersection. Once work wraps on the intersection in early September, she added, the city is anticipating that developer Jeffrey A. Morris will begin construction on his new two-story mixed use building at 400 Main St., now serving as a make-shift downtown parking area with nearly 100 spaces.

The city entered into a $3.1 million sale agreement with Morris for the property in September 2010. Morris won unanimous Los Altos City Council approval in September 2012 to build a 31,000-square foot Class A office and retail structure with underground parking on the 0.78-acre lot, formerly home to a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant.
